SUMMARY:Walking tour in Center Memorial Park
DESCRIPTION:We’ll visit the monuments in the park\, noting the memorials to soldiers who fought in the American Revolution\, Civil War\, and Spanish American War. The Civil War statue was unveiled on September 17\, 1877\, the 15th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam in Sharpsburg\, Maryland\, and we’ll provide commentary on this huge ceremony with its bagpipes and inspiring speeches. About one hour\, and about one mile. Meet at the front steps of Town Hall\, 41 Center Street. Rain or shine\, but extreme weather cancels.

Take a guided tour of the house and a self-guided tour through our 18th-century barn. Check out the displays inside our Visitor Center Barn showing some of the history of Manchester Green. The Farmstead committee organizes events on many of the open house days — farm animal visits\, antique farm tool expert\, duck races\, and holiday festivities. The Farmstead is located near the intersection of East Middle Turnpike and Woodbridge Street. Visitors can park at the municipal lot behind the Senior Center or along the street between the Senior Center and the farmstead itself. From the street\, walk to the back yard using the grass driveway between the house and Woodbridge Pizza. The Woodbridge Farmstead is on the National Register of Historic Places. The farm was donated to the Manchester Historical Society by Raymond and Thelma Woodbridge in 1998. Open houses are usually held 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Sundays of the month\, through October (except May\, when holidays fall on those dates and we’re open the first and third Sundays). Free\, donations welcome.

A small museum store sells copies of maps and local-history items such as books and pamphlets. Our volunteer docents can help with research. Throughout 2026\, we feature the special exhibit Mathias Spiess Tour Book of Manchester: Dinosaurs\, Podunks\, Colonists\, at our regular open houses 10:00 to 2:00 on the first Saturday of the month\, May through December\, and on CT Open Museum Day\, Saturday\, June 13.  The display features contributions from Mathias Spiess\, a Manchester author\, historian and poet along with the Yale Peabody Museum and the Lutz Children’s Museum\, bringing together artifacts and displays. \n

Throughout 2026\, we feature the special exhibit Mathias Spiess Tour Book of Manchester: Dinosaurs\, Podunks\, Colonists\, at our regular open houses 10:00 to 2:00 on the first Saturday of the month\, May through December\, and on CT Open Museum Day\, Saturday\, June 13.  The display features contributions from Mathias Spiess\, a Manchester author\, historian and poet along with the Yale Peabody Museum and the Lutz Children’s Museum\, bringing together artifacts and displays.

DESCRIPTION:Hikers will trace the route of the former railroad\, built in 1869 to connect the main rail line in the North End with the Cheney silk mills in the South End. At 2.5 miles\, it was the shortest private freight-and-passenger railroad in the United States. We will start our hike in the North End\, heading south toward Center Springs Park. We will see the foot-bridge over Bigelow Brook. About 3 miles round trip\, with fairly flat terrain. Extreme weather cancels. No dogs\, please. Free.

SUMMARY:Woodbridge Farmstead open house
DESCRIPTION:The 1830s-era farmhouse and grounds welcome visitors\, young\, old\, and in between! Visit for 10 minutes or 3 hours. Take a guided tour of the house and a self-guided tour through our 18th-century barn. Check out the displays inside our Visitor Center Barn showing some of the history of Manchester Green. The Farmstead committee organizes events on many of the open house days — farm animal visits\, antique farm tool expert\, duck races\, and holiday festivities. The Farmstead is located near the intersection of East Middle Turnpike and Woodbridge Street. Visitors can park at the municipal lot behind the Senior Center or along the street between the Senior Center and the farmstead itself. From the street\, walk to the back yard using the grass driveway between the house and Woodbridge Pizza. The Woodbridge Farmstead is on the National Register of Historic Places. The farm was donated to the Manchester Historical Society by Raymond and Thelma Woodbridge in 1998. Open houses are usually held noon to 2:00 on the second and fourth Sundays of the month\, through October (except May\, when holidays fall on those dates and we’re open the first and third Sundays). DESCRIPTION:Moderately paced one-mile scenic walk on the loop trail at Salter’s Pond\, starting at the parking lot of Salter’s pool\, 123 Lydall Street — plenty of parking. Salter’s Pond got its name from Lorenzo T. Salter who\, in partnership with Mr. Strong\, founded the Salter and Strong paper mill\, which became Lydall paper mill. The walk may be wet depending on the weather\, and hikers should wear sturdy footwear. The route is not mountainous\, but does have stairs\, hills\, and bumpy spots\, where roots stick out\, so participants need to be agile. No dogs\, please. Takes about 1 hour.
